The RFU’s Entry Level Referee Award (ELRA) is designed to provide new referees with the core skills to be able to referee rugby union. It is a two day course that develops into a later stage when the referee decides to join his/her local referee society.
If you choose to join a Referees Society, then you will be required to complete all parts of the ELRA. If, however, you wish to remain only within your own school, club, college or university, then you need only complete ELRA Day1 & 2, which consider the following aspects of refereeing:
Crucial to your learning is that a significant part of both stages is practically based for example you will have an opportunity to observe refereeing in practice, whilst demonstrating your own skills on the field of play.
Cost of the course above is £50.00 per head. Further information from RFU Regional Referee Trainer, Peter Tolan on 024 7646 7231 or peter@pgtolan.plus.com.
There is also a separate "Refereeing Mini-Midi" course, which specifically covers the Continuum (ages up to Under12). This course is designed for parents or coaches who only wish to referee in the mini-midi environment. It also provides them with a good grounding, should they wish to progress onto the ELRA course at a later date. The mini-midi course lasts 6 hours (two evenings, or one afternoon).
Cost of the Mini-Midi course is £25. Further information from RFU Referee Trainer, Phil Everitt on 07985 805000 or everitt.phil@gmail.com.
